There are many questions going into next season with the roster. There has been even more questions with the recent news about Michael Del Zotto and that he is not going to return to the Flyers next year. This is not a total shocker to me, but he has not been consistent this year and the entire defense did struggle, but I believe this is the right move by the Flyers. Nick Schultz will also not return to the Flyers next season, some of you may be wondering how the Flyers can replace these veterans. There are many options for the Flyers on how to fix these holes and the weak defensive core.
Currently Hextall is just filling the Flyers organization with a bunch of prospects that could be the future stars for Philadelphia. Another great place where the Flyers can fix the holes that caused this team to miss the playoffs, are from the Phantoms. The Phantoms recently clinched home ice last night for the first round of the playoffs after a 5-4 victory against the Providence Bruins. The Phantoms have some very talented players on their team, we have seen some of their players been called up before for the Flyers.
Let’s look at the possible players that can fix the defensive issues of the Flyers. Sam Morin, Morin is a big talented player he is only 21 years old and he could most certainly be the key to the Flyers defensive struggles. Robert Hagg, this name may sound similar to you because Hagg was recently called up by the Flyers he did not show massive impact for this one game. Don’t be shocked to see Hagg as a future starting defenseman for the Flyers. Travis Sanheim, Sanheim was drafted at number 17 by the Flyers in 2014. Sanheim will develop into a young talented defender for the Flyers. I hope Hakstol gives him a shot and we will see him in Flyers jersey next season. These are only some of the talented players we have, the Flyers have some other great prospects out of the AHL that you could eventually see in a Flyers Jersey.
There are more questions than just defense going into next season, everyone knows that there are many questions with goal tending. We all have seen the history of Flyers goalie in the past years there has not been much consistency and it looks like the Flyers might be going down that road again. Since Mason will probably not be returning to the Flyers next year, so who will be the starting goalie? Many think it will be Neuvirth with his 2 year contract extension. Although the Flyer have some good goalies from the Phantoms and other teams that are in the system. Don’t surprised if you see other goalies given a shot next season. You will most likely see Anthony Stolarz be the backup and play once a while. This would mean that Alex Lyon will be giving the starting job for the Phantoms and he could possibly be called up sometimes but, don’t expect to see him all the time unless a injury occurs. The Flyers also have some exciting young talent at goalie outside of the Phantoms that could eventually make there way up. Carter Hart is a goalie that is a rising prospect and is bringing the attention of many fans. He currently plays in the Western Hockey League (WHL) for the Everett Silvertips. Hart played for team Canada in the World Juniors, he lost in the gold medal match but he showed so much potential and the skill he can bring to the Flyers. All Flyers fan hope this youth plan is the trick for success once again in Philadelphia and possibly help bring back the Stanley Cup.
