The Phillies Should Cancel the 2020 Season If Gerrit Cole Isn’t in Red Pinstripes

When the Phillies started the 2019 season with Aaron Nola, Nick Pivetta, Jake Arrieta, Zach Eflin and Vince Velasquez as the starting rotation the fans (including me) all looked at it with blind faith. It took about two months for most to realize that even adding Bryce Harper, JT Realmuto, Jean Segura and Andrew McCutchen to the lineup couldn’t carry you to the playoffs.

The Phillies sat on their hands come the trade deadline for what exactly? To see your division rival trade two midrange pitching prospects for a non-rental, Marcus Stroman. This offseason the Phillies can not do the same with the pitching staff.

The Phillies have to by now realize that they are in a division where three teams have better rosters than them. What that means is that they should be striving for a Wild-Card appearance. To break that done even further, you need more than one ace. When you look at who is available this offseason there are a few that stick out but the one that should be a must get is…

Gerrit Cole

The 29 year old, who will win the CY Young this year for the American League. The Phillies need to get away from their analytics with pitchers. They are not the smartest team in the league, but they have something that most teams don’t….

Money, and lots of it.

If John Middleton wants to buy this team into the playoffs he needs to give Gerrit Cole whatever he wants. Middleton also said in his press conference last week that he will be willing to go into the luxury tax to win. We are going on year eight where we don’t have Phillies playoff baseball. I was in seventh grade when the Phillies were in the playoffs… seventh grade. It’s depressing. It’s embarrassing. It’s time they taking pitching serious.

5 years… 6 years… for $225 million. Get it done, or don’t even bother playing the season. The Phillies can’t afford to waste another season of Bryce Harper, JT Realmuto and Aaron Nola in their primes’.
